Years ago I saw an antique Chinese stool of this design and was enamored with the paradox of simple, yet complex design. I was determined to build a reproduction myself. Ten years later I finally got around to building one for myself. Now you have your chance as well. The stool will be built using traditional hand tools and techniques. A range of angled and compound-angle mortise and tenon joints will be used. The joints will be secured using draw borne pegs. The legs are tapered using a variety of hand planes and the seat is sawn, dished and contoured using a mix of saws, shaves and scrapers.
The stool is a pleasure to build and will teach you a lot about design, layout and execution of precision joinery.
